Three Parrot Species Kept As Pets

Many different parrot species are kept as pets, and they are all different. It is important to know which type will be best for you before you make the decision to take on a parrot. Some are small and easy to take care of, but others are much larger and require huge amounts of commitment.

One of the smallest of the parrot species that are kept as pets is the lovebird. Lovebirds are only about 6 inches (15 cm) long. They are very social birds, and because they are small, you might consider getting more than one so that you won't be required to give them all the attention that they need. This is good for them, but you should be aware that if they do have a companion, they are likely to bond with that companion more than you. Although they are generally very friendly birds, if they don't get handled on a daily basis, they can sometimes grow territorial and aggressive.
The next size up from the lovebird is the parakeet. They can be as small as 7 inches (18 cm), but can get up to 18 inches (46 cm) depending on the exact bird you get. They are low maintenance, very social and energetic, and intelligent. Although they are not known for talking, they can sometimes be taught to say a few words. They are popular as pets because they come in many different colors, and have long tails.
Of all the parrots, the biggest is the macaw. There are 16 different types of macaws within the species that come in different sizes and colors. Two of the most popular varieties are the blue and gold macaw and the red macaw. These birds are also the most demanding as far as attention goes, as they have huge amounts of energy. Wild macaws will sometimes travel 500 miles (800 km) in one day to find food and shelter. Although they are intelligent, they are not known for talking, and can sometimes take several years to learn just one word. Because they can live anywhere from 50 to 80 years, it is important that you are fully committed to caring for one of these big parrots.
There are many other parrot species that you can get as pets, so be sure that you have done proper research on every possibility before you decide which is going to be best for you.
