Orangutan Uses iPad

Orangutan Uses iPad to Communicate

Advancements in technology help in understanding how primates think.

Linda Jacobs touches an orangutan at Jungle Island in Miami. Workers there are using iPads to better communicate with the animals. Experts who work with primates have been using sign language and other methods to communicate with apes for years, but technology may open up new possibilities. (J Pat Carter/AP Photo)

In an experiment at Jungle Island, researcher Linda Jacobs told an orangutan a word, then showed the animal an array of pictures on an iPad screen. The orangutan correctly pointed to the image that matched the word. (J Pat Carter/AP Photo)
