Animal microchips linked to causing cancer

(NaturalNews) Many veterinarians recommend them, and most animal shelters require them. Identification microchips injected into the necks of cats and dogs are touted as useful in recovering lost pets because the devices store owner and medical information. But are they safe? A new lawsuit against Merck & Co., Inc., maker of the HomeAgain pet microchip, says they are not, noting that they can cause cancer to develop in pets.



Featured at www.ChipMeNot.org, a website launched to raise awareness about the harm caused to animals by microchips, the lawsuit alleges that Merck's HomeAgain pet microchip induces cancerous tumors in pets. According to the suit, the defendant's cat developed cancer after getting a chip implant, and according to reports, other animals have gotten cancer after getting chipped as well.

"Based on the alarming number of microchip-induced cancers we're discovering, I predict this lawsuit will be just the tip of the iceberg," said Dr. Katherine Albrecht, a consumer advocate and expert on side effects associated with implantable microchips. "Merck and organizations that advocate pet chipping should take this lawsuit seriously and start warning pet owners of the risk of microchip-induced cancer."

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, potential health risks associated with implantable microchips include "adverse tissue reaction". Based on data from the British Small Animal Veterinary Association, this can include "swelling", "infection", "abscesses", and "tumors".

Albrecht presented a paper on the subject called "Microchip-Induced Tumors in Laboratory Rodents and Dogs: A Review of the Literature 1990-2006" (http://www.chipmenot.org/pdfs/P074.pdf) at the June conference of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers that documents the increasing number of animals being harmed by microchips. Currently, there is no repository of data on adverse events associated with microchips in the U.S., but Albrecht organization, CASPIAN, is filling that void by compiling such information and making it available to the public.

Top cosmetic companies give in to greed and resume cruel animal testing, blame China


(NaturalNews) After 20 years of being cruelty-free, companies like Mary Kay, Avon and Estee Lauder are once again testing on animals. Their excuse is that the Chinese government requires animal testing on products sold in China. Doubtful that is comforting to the animals who are tortured with burning chemicals in their eyes and on their skin in the name of greed.

All about the money

Despite the thousands of ingredients already deemed safe for use in personal care products, cosmetic companies are always looking for new ways to manipulate customers. To get a leg up on the competition, these companies change their formulas to include previously unused and formerly untested ingredients just so they can market them as new and improved. Of course this doesn't mean that they actually work better, just that they are slightly different.

Not wanting to lose out on a major source of revenue, Avon has bowed to the inhumane requirements of the Chinese without a fight, reports People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). This from the company who announced to the world in June 1989 that it was permanently ending all animal testing, including testing performed in outside laboratories. However, since Avon created a loophole in their public promise that they "will conduct animal testing only when required by law" it is possible that they have been testing on animals for years, and without informing customers.

Estee Lauder has a similar loophole, using the law as an excuse for unnecessary cruelty. PETA reports that Estee Lauder also complied with the Chinese requirements without a fuss, and without telling customers who still think they are supporting a cruelty-free company. Of the major three, Mary Kay is the only one who is trying to convince China to change their policy, but is still using animal testing in the meantime.

Humane methods

Testing on animals is completely unnecessary. In addition to the thousands of ingredients that have already passed the testing phase for safety and efficacy, there are non-animal methods of testing that produce the same results. Companies such as the non-profitInstitute for In Vitro Sciences, Inc. not only employs these cruelty-freein vitromethods, they also teach them. Through workshops and webinars, laboratory staff are able to learn how to determine an ingredient's safety without injecting, force-feeding or topically applying ingredients on or into helpless animals.

TheInstitute for In Vitro Sciencesis currently forming a coalition of experts to hopefully instruct Chinese scientists on humane testing procedures, according to PETA. Over 1,000 companies already use compassionate methods and do not support animal testing, and not just when it is convenient.

I have been the owner of two cross breed dogs for the past nine years, over the past nine years I have become passionate about the care of animals and trying to help save our native animals in Australia.

Tibby and Charlie are two cross breed, Chihuahua dogs that won my heart. They do not ask for anything in return, if anything did happen to Tibby and Charlie my heart would be shattered. In Australia we have a television show called R.S.P.C.A. (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.) Throughout the world there would be many television shows like ours, television shows like R.S.P.C.A can make inroads around the world to make humans take better care of animals, the world would be a better place.

Sometimes the media can do some good by making known the cruelty to animals around the world. On a night when my family watches the the program, you feel sick to think people can mistreat these precious animals.

Horses that are left in the rain, sores around the horses hooves through being left out in the damp, sometimes their ribs are showing from incorrect feeding. Dogs left to fend for themselves and faeces not cleaned up flees and ticks on their bodies, sores around their eyes. Cats climbing around homes over sinks and cupboards, eating of the kitchen table faeces all over the home.

To solve this problem, Humans that wish to own animals should sit for an exam and have to pass it to own animals. The same sort of test that we have to take for a drivers licence. Hopefully people that own animals stop and think about the care they give animals. To care for a child is the same way you should care for an animal.
